CHARACTER GENERATION RULES

CHARACTER GENERATION RULES

We're using Labyrinth Lord with Advanced Edition Companion as our basis. It's like Old School Essentials (B/X) but with some more bells and whistles.

STATS

Roll 4d6 drop the lowest for stats, switch one if you like.

HIT POINTS

Give yourself max HP for first level, and then roll your hit points for each subsequent level. (You'll probably start as 3rd or 4th level.)

STARTING XP

Your character should start with 8,000XP or 1/2 your old character's XP if your character just died, whichever is higher.

GOLD AND EQUIPMENT

New characters can start with any items they want from the standard equipment list within reason. I will provide you with a few choice special items as well. If your old character just died, you have first dibs on their possessions, except for group artifact type items.

Class and Race Notes

You may play a human character or two non-human races that have been unlocked, the Plumed Reaver or Mole Rat Person, which you can find here

You may select any class listed in Advanced Edition Companion for which you qualify.

If you play a magic-user, druid, illusionist, or cleric, you may use these alternate rules for opium dreamers from our earth cooked up by Gus L.

Thieves

We are using this version that is less weak than the strangely weak B/X thief. It is close to the LOTFP specialist, for those of you who know what that means. http://hillcantons.blogspot.com/2015/09/a-revised-thief-class-for-bx-or-ll.html

Magic-user or Illusionists

Dice randomly for 1 first level spell. Then choose 3 more first level spells and 2 second level spells from the list to know.

Paladins

You can belong to any order you dream up. But if you are from Rastingdrung (our version of the waking world), you have the option of playing as a Storm Rider, touched by the magic of the Chatelaine of Storms. You begin the game with black plate mail. Your steed, when you acquire it, will be a giant crow. You are immune to lightning and electricity. You must adhere to a strict code of honor that includes (1) never working against the Chatelaine's interests, and (2) accepting any challenge to one on one combat, which you will endeavor to fight on fair terms. Although you must be lawful, you do not have to be good to be a Storm Rider, but can be good, neutral, or evil.

Monk

If you are a monk, you can belong to any weird order or tradition you like. But you also have the option of playing as a member of the Black Lotus, the secret order that serves the Invincible Overlord. http://maziriansgarden.blogspot.com/2017/12/agents-of-black-lotus.html

Comments

  1. I made a monk. How should I handle thief skills? AEC:

They advance as thieves of an equal level in the following abilities, sometimes with bonuses as indicated: pick locks (+5%), find and remove traps (+10%), move silently (+10%), climb walls, hide in shadows (+10%), and hear noise.

Should I use the Hill Cantons thief or LL thief as basis?

  2. Brendan S Use Hill Cantons thief. Add one skill point to your starting stealth (2) and add one additional skill point to your starting score for one of the following (you choose): find remove traps, hear noise, or climb walls.

  3. Brendan S I also need to know before the session about a fear or trauma experienced by your character, the sort of thing that you might have legitimately terrifying nightmares about.
